Every spring, a tiny group of pigeons comes back to hang around the bird feeders I hang onto the small tree near our balcony. The pigeons are too big to get to the feeders themselves, but they wait around for the food the small birds drop on the ground. They especially enjoy perching on our bedroom window shutters.
Yesterday, I opened the balcony door for the kitties when the sun came through the clouds for a little bit. Glad I did it at the right time! Because Hero and Lisa were excited to see a pigeon again! The small birds were chattering away really loud, probably because they were happy about some warmth from the sun as well.
First the most important thing: He’s been fine since after the Vet visit. He’s a happy Sonic again, flopping all over the apartment as always.
Originally, I started to write a post for Tuesday, which I never got to finish because Sonic became unwell due to sudden acute obstipation.
It started during the night from Monday to Tuesday. I woke up to Sonic being very restless. He was up and down from the bed, going to the toilet and back up on the bed again. He did it repeatedly, so I got up with him and noticed he was straining to have a bowel movement. He was really trying hard, but nothing would happen. This went on for a while, but eventually Sonic curled up beside me and we all fell asleep.
As I got up the next morning, I came into the living room to Sonic happily playing with one of the strings they have hanging around the place. He also ate and drank properly and because I had put more of his medicine in his food that morning, I was hoping it would resolve itself.
Later that same Tuesday morning we also had a Lady come by who had a look at our bathroom tiles, so she can prepare the right ones for us when they come to change the tap in the shower.
It was all very busy that morning and into the afternoon. But at around 2pm I tried to have a little nap, and Sonic was with me on the bed as well. We slept for a little while, but then I woke up to him straining to have a bowel movement again. The periods of rest between him trying became much shorter, until he was basically straining the whole time, even while being on the bed. I think he was becoming really exhausted. His back legs were moving and kicking and he was unable to relax at all anymore.
He also started feeling hot to the touch and he was now complaining when trying to press out a bowel movement, without anything happening. He was glowing hot and seemed to get weak. He got worse quickly suddenly.
I knew I have to get him to the Vet instantly. I called our Vet office, which was closing at that time of day, to ask which Vet would be on call for emergencies right now. But instead, the Vet told us to come over right away and he’ll wait for us. Our Vet office has two Vets. The Lady Vet is doing the mornings and the male Vet is doing the late afternoons. I know both of them, and he is just as great and kind.
My hands were shaking, my heart pounding in my head, I was so worried about our sweet boy. I picked Sonic up from the bed and put him into the carrier and called a Taxi, which thankfully came within just a minute.
Sonic was complaining loudly all the way to the Vet about being in the carrier. Since he can’t hear me talking to him, I just put my hand into the carrier and laid it on him, which helped. Traffic was thankfully not bad anymore, since it was more than half an hour after the evening rush hour. We arrived in maybe 6 minutes.
At the Vet
Just after I got in and put the carrier down, the Vet already came to us to take us into the examination room. Sonic was put on the examination table and checked out, while I was right there, next to him. The Vet hooked Sonic up to a drip for rehydration and then a bit later, two tiny cat size appropriate enemas were given.
Sonic was just lying on his side with his head in my hand, which he always likes to do, while we had to wait for the medicine to do its work inside his digestive tract. He was obviously totally exhausted. But even if he weren’t exhausted, Sonic is always relaxed and patient at the Vet. He never complains or struggles. He’s the most patient cat.
After the medicine had enough time to work, the Vet started massaging Sonics tummy. It took a bit of effort for Sonic, but eventually, the whole problem was resolved and that poor boy was relieved of his blockage. The Vet even gave Sonic a big clean up with warm running water, cat shampoo and then dried him off. Even with that, he remained as calm as anything.
Then as the carrier got put on the table, Sonic just went in by himself right away. He’s had enough at that point, I’m sure. Though he must have felt so much better already.
The Vet gave us some more medicine that helps with Peristalsis in the digestive tract. I have to put 0.3ml in his mouth with a little syringe three times a day.
In addition, I’ll give him the fibre-rich dry food again. I had stopped giving it because Sonic kept throwing up from it. But the Vet explained to me why that was likely happening… The fibre-rich food was being digested in his stomach quite quickly and easily, but then could not move on fast enough out of his stomach into his intestines, because it was working too slow, which then caused him to throw it back up.
Now with the medicine and smaller portions, he seems to keep it down just fine! Which is a good sign that his intestines are now working better.
How Sonic is doing now
Sonic was already feeling so much better right after we got home from the Vet at about 8pm. His temperature had already dropped down to almost normal again and he was flopping down on the floor, as he always likes to do. Then he just went to sleep and slept all the way through to the next morning.
The next day he was already up for playing again, feeling hungry and drinking properly. He was fine and a happy little kitty boy again!
He’s been going to the toilet without a problem since and is all back to normal.
So how did it come to this?
Sonic needs a bit of medicine on his dry food that helps his digestion work properly. Unfortunately, he refuses to eat wet food. I tried and tried, he does not want to know anything about it. So dry food it is, although it’s high-quality dry food. He drinks plenty of water, so he’s well hydrated normally.
Now I am sure I know what happened that it came to this… Samantha must have eaten his medicated dry food. The medicine is a syrup that gets put right on top of his food, and normally he’s already waiting to have his food when I put it down. But he was not feeling that hungry I guess, so I just put it down for him. Samantha must have gotten to that food before Sonic did, without me noticing… I put Sonic’s dry food WAY OUT of Samantha’s path. His food is right next to our bed, on my side of it and normally it works out like that.
Samantha must have eaten Sonic’s medicated food on Sunday and Monday, because she had a light case of the runs on Monday morning and Tuesday morning.
The next problem was that Sonic did not drink like he usually does. In fact, I think none of the cats drank normally Sunday to Tuesday. I have a feeling that the extremely high humidity we have right now made them less thirsty. They might have felt like their throats aren’t feeling dry ever and did not feel the need to drink as much.
This combined must have Sonic caused to get severely blocked up.
Now I learned more and will make sure that nothing like this happens again. We already have two cat fountains that they all love to drink out of. But I think I’ll add another small one, which I will move around.
I found that putting a water bowl somewhere on a new spot will make the cats curious about it and then drink out of it, just because it’s suddenly right there. Having more water bowls around generally always helps. With Sonic, Samantha and Murli I found that their water intake increased by a lot after we got the water fountains.
It’s so wonderful to see him feel happy and well again. We have a beautiful sunny summer day today! Murli is out on the balcony and Samantha at the window in the living room, enjoying the sun. Sonic is wandering around the apartment after he having a little play fight with Samantha.
Have a lovely Caturday! Love from me and the cats!
We stayed at home for the past two weeks, as the weather wasn’t really predictable to go take the cable car up the mountain. They would have shut it down anyway as it was too windy. It had cooled down a lot for the first week and it rained a lot. It’s warming up now, but we still get rain every afternoon pretty much. But we always enjoy our days, no matter if we’re home or somewhere else.
I also had a lot fewer migraines! Instead, I had quite bad fatigue for some reason. I also have low energy, or rather, not enough for everything I want to do. But that fatigue was really annoying, as I felt too tired for anything. Even too tired to use the laptop, read or write much. I might have not been drinking enough… It’s better now after drinking more, but it’s not yet totally gone.
Even though it’s looking like a thunderstorm is coming right now, we finally had a lovely summer day today!
I’m using two umbrellas on the balcony to have shade on the whole balcony for the cats and us (well mainly me, as Ralph does not mind the sun).
The cats are happy! With the bad weather, the cats stayed in for much of the day for two weeks. Inside, Samantha’s favourite spot at the moment is this carrier. This old carrier has been a bed for a long time already.
I brought Murli’s big pillow from my Dad’s home. I forgot to bring it when I moved and then I forgot for all this time… It’s not like she was out of beds or anything. We have countless baskets of all types, sizes and shapes and countless other nice spots for the cats. But Murli was definitely happy to get this big pillow again! My beloved Mum bought it for Murli when she was a kitten. She loved it ever since. The perfect spot for the pillow was the washing machine, since Murli likes to hang out in the kitchen anyway.
Sonic still loves the bed the most…
I’m starting Crochet
I always loved Crochet! And I’m going to crochet a Kitty-Curtain for the top part of our living room window.
This is the curtain that I’ll be doing. I bought a German book with lots of cute crochet curtains on Amazon.
This is the curtain I’ll be doing:
It’s been a long time since I did anything though and my Crochet stuff has been lost for the most part when I moved one time… Because I really wanted to start it up again, I ordered what I needed…
Like a book that teaches everything I need, as I forgot a lot and I also want to learn more.
I also got a set of crochet needles and a bag to put the yarn in and all the tools. The bag has a pocket for the yarn that you can close. But it also has little holes so only the thread gets pulled out while you crochet. It’s helpful because if I have the yarn just out on the table, with it spinning every time I pull on it, Murli goes all silly with it. So that bag is helping a lot with that.
I’m really going to enjoy this little project and all the ones that will follow!
Water damage in our building
A couple weeks ago, a contractor sent by the building management came to inform us that a wet stain in the stairwell has been reported to the building management. I had no idea what he was talking about, but he showed me.
After he showed me that spot, I knew what he was talking about. I just never thought it was water damage. That stain was there for a very long time, maybe even since we moved in. I always thought it was damage from people bonking furniture into the wall when moving. The stain never changed and always looked the same, but looking closer it is definitely wet.
The problem is, behind this wall, which is a very thick wall (about a meter thick), is our bathroom. The back wall of our bathroom. Within that thick wall are numerous water pipes. Immediately to the right of the stain, much closer to the stairwell, is the hallway toilet that two neighbours use who live in the two one-room units on the same floor as us. The contractor had a look in that toilet and with him, I did too. The back wall of that toilet is wet with stains as well. It’s not a big leak, it must be a tiny little leak somewhere that has been going on for a while.
From our apartment and our bathroom, you can’t notice anything. It’s all perfectly nice. No mould, no bad smell, no tiles falling off the wall. It’s a nice bathroom and I love the tiles. I really hope they won’t have to rip our bathroom to bits… Our toilet is fine as well, you can’t notice anything there either.
On Monday the contractor comes again and they are going to look for a leak in the pipes. No idea how they’re going to do that. Maybe they already rip the bathroom to bits tomorrow. He said the fault search will take about two to three hours when I asked. Hopefully, they don’t find the fault within one of our pipes, so that they don’t have to make a construction site of our bathroom. Of course, everything is paid by the building management, but it’s no fun. I just have no idea how that is going to go.
The other side of the wall, in the hallway toilet and the stairwell wall need to be repaired anyway, so I would hope they would open the wall from that side and not from our perfectly fine bathroom.
Anyway, before they are coming on Monday, I’ll get both cat litters and their food and all the cats and close the door to the hallway and kitchen. That way they will be in the living room and bedroom and the hallway in between those two. But the door to the rest of the apartment will stay closed, so that they won’t have to be so afraid and are safe. Because with people going in and out of the apartment, I don’t want to risk them running out of the apartment door.
I’ll let you all know what comes out of all that on Monday.
Regarding the noisy neighbour I wrote about last time… It’s been quiet for almost two weeks now. The temperatures have been low during most of these nights, so we had the bedroom window closed and would not have heard anything. But we didn’t hear anything when out on the balcony really late either. Also, it’s been gradually warming up again these past days, and now with the bedroom window open again, we did not hear anything from that neighbour either. Maybe enough people complained or they calmed down lol.
Hope everyone and their kitties are fine! Sending love from all of us and Happy Caturday! 💕
Friday started out much warmer and more sunny than it has been for many weeks. But Caturday felt almost like summer, as did Sunday, when it was even warmer. So of course the balcony door and the windows were open all day for the cats to enjoy, and for us too.
It was nice to feel warm air coming in from the open balcony door for a change. I put the umbrella up and some hung two mats on either end of the balcony for shade, and put the chairs out.
Samantha jumped right through the string curtain and onto this chair…
No, she could not care less about the string on her head. The birds were up and down at the feeder and it was just nice out there in the shade.
Murli and Samantha stayed out there most of the afternoon on Saturday.
They like to change the chairs every now and then. Thankfully we have more than those two chairs, so I was able to get a chair for myself too.
Unlike Samantha, Murli tends to get hot more easily with her longer fur, so she went in to rest on the fridge for a while.
Later in the afternoon, more and more clouds came up, and the wind started picking up too. We really thought rain would be coming again.
It was totally overcast by the time I went to bed later that night, but to my surprise, the next morning (Sunday) was clear and sunny!
This lovely Sunday became the first really beautiful warm day this year. We all really enjoyed the warm air coming in through the windows and the balcony door all day, and how nice it was outside.
Even Sonic, who only really likes to go out for longer when it is warm, was enjoying it out there. The birds were active at the feeder as usual, providing entertainment for Sonic, Samantha and Murli.
Also on that Sunday, Austria voted in the European Elections. I went to my local voting station right in the morning, because it might have been much more busy later that day, since we live in the biggest district in our city. It was just down the street from us in a school building.
Above the entrance it says “Mädchen”, which is German for “girls”. It is an old school building and still has the writing from when schools used to be separated into girls and boys houses. The second half of the building, which is farther to the left and not in the picture, the writing above the entrance says “Knaben” which is an older German word for “boys”.
It was quite busy in our street that day from all the people going to cast their votes. This school was just one of many voting stations in our district. Every district in the city has many of them. It’s usually very close to where you live and schools and other public buildings are used as voting stations.
Anyways, I went back home to enjoy the rest of the day with my awesome husband and my sweet kitties. So we truly had a great weekend, despite having had two migraines.
Today, Monday, I woke up with yet another migraine… The weather had changed again and it was dark, cold and raining. It kept raining all day too and we had to put the heat back on lol. But we’re already looking forward to the weekend again, because the forecast says it will be nice!
Hope you all had a lovely weekend and had a pleasant start into the new week ❤
Hey my dear furends! It was a couple of things. First I was just really busy, & then our internet was having problems. Connection would be there, then gone again. Yesterday it was gone completely. And I needed to safe my remaining data for my 2 mobile devices internet. It’s working normally again normally it seems.
The important/serious part of the update comes now
Wednesday night at 8pm, police were suddenly and quietly positioning themselves in my street & neighborhood. No sirens, nothing. Really quiet. No one knew what was up. They told all the people to leave the pubs and restaurants, and leave the area or go into their buildings. The street was eerie & quiet. There were many police cars & the special unit that usually always comes for more serious things was there too. They had the big guns out.
They closed off all the streets around us and put their own police vans and cars into the streets as additional barriers. After they had done all of that, I saw a policeman from the special unit walk with a second one through my street. One was carrying that special bag that gets put over things that are suspected to be explosives. Those bags are able to contain the blast and any shrapnel and things they put into those self made ones to hurt people even more. Then I knew something was wrong. But still, I thought maybe they just found a lone luggage standing around somewhere and people got worried about it and called the police. Things like that happen and of course they always have to assume it might really be dangerous. I really thought it must be something like that.
But the next day (Thursday) I heard that we had an actual terrorist b.mb threat, that was apparently prevented thanks to a person from the middle east, who heard about a plan for this somewhere and called police right away. This might have really prevented something from happening, because police were here so quickly. Maybe the extremists who had planned this thing, where prevented from doing anything thanks to police being here. The attack was apparently planned for around 10pm, but police had already been here at 8pm, after the person had called them about what he heard. It was supposed to be an attack right here in my street. There’s a big church right near me and we had an important Christian holiday. Maybe that’s why.
On Thursday police were there all day too and they were there during the night too apparently. They still had their police vans as a barrier in all streets leading to my neighborhood and my street. Only pedestrians were able to pass. It was also because they didn’t want someone attacking with a car. My church had a lot of people there due to the Christian holiday. Buildings like ours had their entrances protected by a police van right in front of the entrance, and a couple police men. So no suspicious people could get into the buildings & do something in them possibly. There was lots of police all around us. Really a lot! On Friday it seemed it was all back to normal for the most part. They are still patrolling more than they usually do, but life started to be lived again normally. There is an event on the other side of the river (Our building is next to the river) and I saw that they have put their police cars there as barriers again, to prevent anyone from trying to attack with a car again.
Unfortunately I had a migraine on Thursday, and I felt extremely exhausted, because I had to haul stuff with some friends. The last bits of my stuff that a friend had stored for me in their storage room they didn’t need. But they move out and so I had to get my stuff. And I still felt really really exhausted yesterday. So that’s why we weren’t here really.
I am so sorry my dear friends and furends. I really am. I thank you all for your sweet comments. I also thank you all really really so much, for always being so understanding towards my frequent migraines and being offline often because of that.
Murli & I love you all💕 Thanks for being such wonderful pals!
