What a week! Constipated Sonic emergency.

Sonic

First the most important thing: He’s been fine since after the Vet visit. He’s a happy Sonic again, flopping all over the apartment as always.

Originally, I started to write a post for Tuesday, which I never got to finish because Sonic became unwell due to sudden acute obstipation.

It started during the night from Monday to Tuesday. I woke up to Sonic being very restless. He was up and down from the bed, going to the toilet and back up on the bed again. He did it repeatedly, so I got up with him and noticed he was straining to have a bowel movement. He was really trying hard, but nothing would happen. This went on for a while, but eventually Sonic curled up beside me and we all fell asleep.

As I got up the next morning, I came into the living room to Sonic happily playing with one of the strings they have hanging around the place. He also ate and drank properly and because I had put more of his medicine in his food that morning, I was hoping it would resolve itself.

Later that same Tuesday morning we also had a Lady come by who had a look at our bathroom tiles, so she can prepare the right ones for us when they come to change the tap in the shower.

It was all very busy that morning and into the afternoon. But at around 2pm I tried to have a little nap, and Sonic was with me on the bed as well. We slept for a little while, but then I woke up to him straining to have a bowel movement again. The periods of rest between him trying became much shorter, until he was basically straining the whole time, even while being on the bed. I think he was becoming really exhausted. His back legs were moving and kicking and he was unable to relax at all anymore.

He also started feeling hot to the touch and he was now complaining when trying to press out a bowel movement, without anything happening. He was glowing hot and seemed to get weak. He got worse quickly suddenly.

I knew I have to get him to the Vet instantly. I called our Vet office, which was closing at that time of day, to ask which Vet would be on call for emergencies right now. But instead, the Vet told us to come over right away and he’ll wait for us. Our Vet office has two Vets. The Lady Vet is doing the mornings and the male Vet is doing the late afternoons. I know both of them, and he is just as great and kind.

My hands were shaking, my heart pounding in my head, I was so worried about our sweet boy. I picked Sonic up from the bed and put him into the carrier and called a Taxi, which thankfully came within just a minute.

Sonic was complaining loudly all the way to the Vet about being in the carrier. Since he can’t hear me talking to him, I just put my hand into the carrier and laid it on him, which helped. Traffic was thankfully not bad anymore, since it was more than half an hour after the evening rush hour. We arrived in maybe 6 minutes.

Sonic in the carrier, just as I got in the door at the Vet office and put him down on a little chair. The carrier is the wrong way around… There are windows with netting on both ends and on the other side of it, as well as on the top

Just after I got in and put the carrier down, the Vet already came to us to take us into the examination room. Sonic was put on the examination table and checked out, while I was right there, next to him. The Vet hooked Sonic up to a drip for rehydration and then a bit later, two tiny cat size appropriate enemas were given.

Sonic was just lying on his side with his head in my hand, which he always likes to do, while we had to wait for the medicine to do its work inside his digestive tract. He was obviously totally exhausted. But even if he weren’t exhausted, Sonic is always relaxed and patient at the Vet. He never complains or struggles. He’s the most patient cat.

After the medicine had enough time to work, the Vet started massaging Sonics tummy. It took a bit of effort for Sonic, but eventually, the whole problem was resolved and that poor boy was relieved of his blockage. The Vet even gave Sonic a big clean up with warm running water, cat shampoo and then dried him off. Even with that, he remained as calm as anything.

Then as the carrier got put on the table, Sonic just went in by himself right away. He’s had enough at that point, I’m sure. Though he must have felt so much better already.

The Vet gave us some more medicine that helps with Peristalsis in the digestive tract. I have to put 0.3ml in his mouth with a little syringe three times a day.

In  addition, I’ll give him the fibre-rich dry food again. I had stopped giving it because Sonic kept throwing up from it. But the Vet explained to me why that was likely happening… The fibre-rich food was being digested in his stomach quite quickly and easily, but then could not move on fast enough out of his stomach into his intestines, because it was working too slow, which then caused him to throw it back up.

Now with the medicine and smaller portions, he seems to keep it down just fine! Which is a good sign that his intestines are now working better.

How Sonic is doing now

Sonic the next morning, after the Vet. He was still tired, but obviously feeling well and comfy now.

Sonic was already feeling so much better right after we got home from the Vet at about 8pm. His temperature had already dropped down to almost normal again and he was flopping down on the floor, as he always likes to do. Then he just went to sleep and slept all the way through to the next morning.

The next day he was already up for playing again, feeling hungry and drinking properly. He was fine and a happy little kitty boy again!

He’s been going to the toilet without a problem since and is all back to normal.

So how did it come to this?

Sonic needs a bit of medicine on his dry food that helps his digestion work properly. Unfortunately, he refuses to eat wet food. I tried and tried, he does not want to know anything about it. So dry food it is, although it’s high-quality dry food. He drinks plenty of water, so he’s well hydrated normally.

Now I am sure I know what happened that it came to this… Samantha must have eaten his medicated dry food. The medicine is a syrup that gets put right on top of his food, and normally he’s already waiting to have his food when I put it down. But he was not feeling that hungry I guess, so I just put it down for him. Samantha must have gotten to that food before Sonic did, without me noticing… I put Sonic’s dry food WAY OUT of Samantha’s path. His food is right next to our bed, on my side of it and normally it works out like that.

Samantha must have eaten Sonic’s medicated food on Sunday and Monday, because she had a light case of the runs on Monday morning and Tuesday morning.

The next problem was that Sonic did not drink like he usually does. In fact, I think none of the cats drank normally Sunday to Tuesday. I have a feeling that the extremely high humidity we have right now made them less thirsty. They might have felt like their throats aren’t feeling dry ever and did not feel the need to drink as much.

This combined must have Sonic caused to get severely blocked up.

Now I learned more and will make sure that nothing like this happens again. We already have two cat fountains that they all love to drink out of. But I think I’ll add another small one, which I will move around.

I found that putting a water bowl somewhere on a new spot will make the cats curious about it and then drink out of it, just because it’s suddenly right there. Having more water bowls around generally always helps. With Sonic, Samantha and Murli I found that their water intake increased by a lot after we got the water fountains.

It’s so wonderful to see him feel happy and well again. We have a beautiful sunny summer day today! Murli is out on the balcony and Samantha at the window in the living room, enjoying the sun. Sonic is wandering around the apartment after he having a little play fight with Samantha.

Have a lovely Caturday! Love from me and the cats!

A rainy cold and windy spring. The cats want some sun!

Like almost all over Europe, it’s been mainly cold, windy and rainy this spring. Again and again, the alps got snow, and the temperatures dropped as the ice cold wind came through. We did have a few really nice and war days, but they were usually just a day between rain and cold.

Cats all over miss the sun, as do their humans. Ralph especially does not like the cold and so we keep the heat going. It’s just that sometimes I have to turn down the heat, because I get hot so easily, but then Ralph feels a bit chilly. The heating we have is awesome and really creates a lovely warm apartment. So it’s all lovely and nice in our home. But the cats, especially Murli, would love to be able to go in and out onto the balcony as they please, but it’s too cold to leave the balcony door open. The same goes for the windows. I put a cat safety net on the windows in the summer, so I can leave them open and the cats can hang out there, enjoying the fresh air and the sun.

I always think about what else I can do to make the cats happy, so I got them a board with a cushion on it (this one), to create an even surface for them to lie on. Because the window sill on our living room window isn’t even and has different levels. This window design is typical for old buildings like ours here. This is what it looks like:

And now with the cushion board, they have a comfy little place to relax or watch what’s going on outside:

I have to wrap a towel around it, because otherwise Samantha would rip the cushion to shreds lol.

But isn’t she a sweetheart? She loves it on there. After I took this picture, I filmed her for a bit as well:

(Excuse the dirty window. We just had a construction site creating a lot of dust, and then it rained…) She loves the soft board and now she can finally lie down at the living room window properly. it’s lovely to see that happy little girl <3 Murli and Sonic enjoy it just as much.

The other new things I got for them are two water fountains / water dispensers for cats. Because it keeps the water clean all day. The absolutely love it and drink even more than before. It’s awesome. Sonic is the one who has the longest drinks and so it was easy to take a picture with him drinking.

Murli, Samantha and Sonic are all doing really well with their medicines. They are all happy and feeling their best. Murli is back to normal now, full of life again, happy and  talkig a lot, and following me around. She is really busy watching the birds at the moment. I feed them and have two bird feeders, one in the bushes and the other on the metal pole for our washing line on the balcony, so it’s not right in or near the balcony. Murli is out there as much as possible right now with the cold. But we did have a few warm days, like when I did this video of her.

It’s purrfect kitty TV for Murli. Thankfully she does not try to jump up to get to the birds, she just likes to watch them and talks to them. Samantha and Sonic would not jump at them either.

Today, the icy wind is still blowing, it’s cloudy and dark and it will probably rain again. We all are waiting for the summer and hope it will come eventually. It’s still spring now anyway, even if it does not seem like it with snow on the surrounding mountains… The following images are of the webcam that is located on a nearby mountain, that’s just outside of the city and about 1400m. That’s why it’s so cold.

I want to go up there with Ralph in the summer, because it’s lovely and I haven’t been up there since my childhood. There’s a restaurant up there which serves awesome sweet things as well. You get up there by cable car, which I really look forward to. The times I was up there as a kid, we walked up or we got taken up by car. So it will be my first time with that cable car, and I’m sure to film and take pictures of it all.

Hope you’re all well! Ralph, the kitties and myself wish everyone a nice day <3

February 17, 2018 – A little update about things just dragging out so much

Hello everyone! It’s been just really a long long while since my last post. I just can’t seem to feel motivated, because of anxiety and feeling a bit stressed. As you know, we’ve been trying to get married for months now, and every time it seems, we are being sent away, because there’s something else that is required by the law.

It would have been easier somewhat, if at least they could have told us what exactly we need to get all at once, instead of bit by bit every time we come back. Especially with things we need to get from the embassy in Vienna. It’s not exactly right around the corner and it’s not cheap to get there either.

If we would have been told everything we need to get, we could have done so when we were at the embassy in December. But in the office, they just tell us “Oh you just simply go to the embassy for that…”

Like the first time we’ve been to the registry office in Graz, where we’ve been told we need to get the certificate from the British embassy that confirms that Ralph is free to marry and that all his papers / documents are genuine. The other thing we’ve been told is that we need to have Ralph’s documents translated into German. I even asked if it has to be a special translator, like a court-approved one and I got the answer “No, it just needs to be simply translated into German and I can get that done by whomever I want “. That was all.

It took us a couple of weeks until we were able to go to Vienna. But eventually, we went to the British embassy in Vienna to get the certificate, which is called “Ehefähigkeitszeugnis” in German. Roughly translated it would be “MarriageAbilityCertificate”. The British embassy also specified that the document they give out is the “Ehefähigkeitszeugnis” and that they give out hundreds of them every year in Austria when a Brit marries an Austrian.

So, after that, we sorted out the translation of the divorce and marriage certificates of Ralph, except for his birth certificate, since we thought it’s silly to translate that, as it’s so obvious and easy to understand since its simply names and birth dates and places.

After that, we went back to the registry office in the end of January, and then suddenly, we were told that Ralph might have to get a new birth certificate and that it probably needs to be translated as well. The first time we’ve been at the registry office, the same person had seen us and that person did not say anything about the birth certificate eventually having to be new, even though they looked at it back then as well. Upon asking where we would get a new birth certificate, the answer was like I wrote above “You just simply go to the embassy in Vienna for that.” Why could they not mention that the first time? We can’t simply go to Vienna like that all the time, not to mention that it’s expensive.

But on that day, they took in our documents and everything and they said it might be fine like that anyway. We were told that the registrar would contact us.

And that contact happened this Friday, the 16th of February, via email to me. In that email, it said that there were some more documents needed for us to be able to get married.

So we need to get all the English documents translated by an official translator who would be court. As well, we need to get an Apostille for each of Ralph’s documents, which we can hopefully get via mail from the British government. But it seems like we can do that according to the British government website. I think it’s about 50£ for each Apostille.

Nothing about needing an Apostille was mentioned the previous times we have been there. Nothing at all.

Not even on their website. But it’s in the state laws, but how are we to know. You would think that the registry office would know and tell you everything that is needed.

But the last thing listed as being needed was exactly the document we had already given them, the certificate from the British embassy in Vienna.

Upset, I wrote back right away, explaining that we had already given them that document and that they should have it. And to let me know what’s up with that.

Later on, the person called me, telling me that the document was found, but that they’re not sure it will be accepted as “Ehefähigkeitszeugnis”. Seems like they haven’t seen it before. Apparently no British / Austrian marriages in my city, otherwise they would have known it. The embassy gives those out all the time and they’re accepted just fine in the rest of Austria apparently.

The thing is, that Austria is a bit similar to the US in the way that there’s federal law and state laws. Each state has their own laws to some degree.

But still, it’s an official document, it’s the exact thing they wanted. That’s just the way the British one is. Every countries documents look different. That’s what you get from them and we would not get anything different from the embassy, even if they won’t accept it.

I have been seriously thinking about getting married in England now and I will be looking into it. Since Ralph and I live here, I don’t know if it would be possible to just go to Ralph’s home country England, just to get married and then back to Austria again. But I will find out.

It might even work out easier and cheaper.

Though, I will get a call on Thursday, where we will be informed if the embassy certificate will be accepted or not.

So we will see.

Sigh… I’m really upset and Ralph is really upset. Even the cats were upset when we were totally upset on Friday, since they pick up the worried feelings up from us.

We feel a little better today, but not by much. We don’t sleep right, as it’s constantly in our minds.

I would have not been too upset about the other things, but that the highly official certificate from the British embassy might not be accepted, that’s just something we would have never expected.

We love each other so much, and we want to be family and married. It’s security also, as once we’re married, we have rights. If something were to happen to either of us, we would have no right to speak to doctors or make decisions we know that the other would want. And most of all, we found in each other the love of our lives, and we want to be husband and wife forever.

We’re about to go to sleep now lol. I hope that this blog post will help me feel better since I could get it out like that.

Otherwise, we’re happy and healthy, as are our 3 kitties 😽😽😽

I will reply to the sweet comments tomorrow and post a couple more uplifting things, like cat pictures!😸 Yay!

Thanks everyone for reading and for being the lovely kind friends that you are.

Night, night from Ralph, Murli, Samantha, Sonic and me☺️😽😽😽☺️✨🌙💤💤💤💤💤

Interesting Article – Scratch the Surface: Why Cats Scratch and What to Do About It

Hello dear furends!
An interesting article was shared with my recently, about the different preferences cats have in the way they scratch and the different reasons for scratching. I had no idea that they have their own preference in the way they scratch. I always assumed that cats adjust the way they scratch to the object they use to scratch. But as it turns out, they actually have a preference for scratching vertically or horizontally. Now I know that Murli likes to scratch vertically. She never uses other surfaces like scratching pads that just lie on the floor.

The way she scratches in the video, is the only way she scratches.
She will completely ignore anything else. Scratching pads have to
be mounted onto a wall for her to use them.

Kaylee from Ghergich.com shared the article with me, as they teamed up with Petco to create this article. She was so kind to write the following intro for our blog, and kindly let me put these adorable graphics into my post. The Link to the article is within the following title and at the end of this post.

Scratch the Surface: Why Cats Scratch and What to Do About It

If you’re like most cat owners, you know that your special feline or felines has a personality all their own. They might be playful and energetic, or more content and quiet. They may move from room to room during the day, or find a spot in the sun—and stay there. Cats are distinct, which is part of why we love them so much.

There’s another distinct habit that’s instinctual to all cats, but that every feline works at differently—scratching. Scratching isn’t anything you can make your cat stop—but it isn’t anything that has to make you angry at your cat, especially if they target furniture or other special pieces in the home.

It’s important to understand why a cat scratches. It isn’t to be destructive—it’s actually healthy. It helps them sharpen claws and get rid of dead skin, and it also enables them to stretch. So how can you help them do that—and live contentedly with them? This graphic can show you the way.

There is much more information and explanations within the original article:
