A Cute Surprise! We adopted 2 rescue kittens, Hero and Lisa!

Hello everyone! Where should I even start? Well, in short, we adopted 2 more cats into our little family… The nearly 6 months old kittens, Lisa and Hero!

The exact date of their birth is not known. It was Ralph who came up with the name Hero for the sweet little boy. They already had temporary names, Nero and Lisa. Ralph had no idea at first that they had these names already, and came up with Hero for the little boy. When you read their story below, and what he had to endure, you understand the name. He’s our little Hero, for surviving it all with Lisa. I’ll keep Nero in his full name, but we’ll call him Hero for short, so it’s Nero the little Hero and Lisa.

The whole story…

2019 11 02 Lisa and Hero at the Foster home
This was the picture I saw first when hearing about them. It’s Lisa and Hero when they were still at their Foster home.

On Saturday, November 2, 2019, I read about the two kitten siblings, who had it very rough until they were found and nursed back to health. Like it happens all the time, and every time is one time to many, everywhere, someone “got rid” of their kittens by simply setting them out by the street. They had to fend for themselves for who knows how long.

About two months ago, they were found in the midst of the rubbish of a construction site. In all, there were 4 kittens, each of them in a very bad state. Dehydrated, starving and the little boy Hero was extremely close to death. He was found with his right back leg severely injured. He was probably hit by a car, or some other horrible thing happened while they’ve been out there by themselves. Hero must have been in so much pain from that badly injured leg, and that for who knows how many days. Thank God these sweet kittens were found in time, as they surely would not have been able to stay alive, in the state they were in, for much longer.

It was Helga, who owns her own rescue and does it all by herself with the help of donations and foster homes, who brought the kittens to the first available Vet right away. That Vet then wanted to put sweet Hero down right away! But Helga wasn’t going to allow that and wanted him saved. So, Hero’s back right leg was amputated and everything else was done to treat all the kittens medically. Then they all were nursed back to full health in a foster home. They cared for them wonderfully, as all the kittens are now perfectly healthy and full of life. Hero’s amputation site healed without an issue and the fur has almost completely grown back by now as well.

Two of the four kittens have found a home already, but Lisa and Hero were still waiting for a loving home. Helga expected that little Lisa would have maybe found a home after a while, but Hero would have likely been left behind. Not one person was even interested in Hero, or both of them in the two months since they were rescued. Even when she mentioned the two kittens to people that were looking to take cats, declined. I ended up being the first and only person to be interested and sweet Hero and Lisa.

When I read about Hero and Lisa on November 2nd, I didn’t even have to think twice. In an instant, I knew deep in my heart that I wanted both of them to have a forever home with us. On that same day, Helga and I had a phone call and agreed that she would visit us the next day (Sunday, November 3rd) to get to know Ralph and myself and see our home, to make sure that the kittens would have a good home with us.

While we were waiting to hear if we would be approved to take in the kittens, I was all over the place. I messed up that Sunday’s dinner and 3 of Ralph’s coffees. Ralph has his coffee black with two sugar cubes. I put milk in one coffee, put 6 sugar cubes in another, and no sugar in the 3rd and had it go cold as well. It was funny.

Soon after we knew, we would be able to take Hero and Lisa. The big day was on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 the kittens were brought to us at around 6pm by the awesome Helga!

That whole day I was so excited, messed up coffee, and did some shopping for the kittens and Murli, Samantha and Sonic. It was awfully rainy that day, so when I went back home from the shop with two cat toilets and a big bag of food, toys and kitty litter, I had no arm free from an umbrella. Even though I only had to walk from the tram stop to our home, I was soaking wet when I got home…

I just put everything down in the hallway. These are the two new kitty toilets I bought that day.

Murli knew something was up anyway…

I got everything ready for the new family members and then, finally, Helga came with Hero in Lisa in a carrier. We had them come out in our living room, where I had prepared an area where they would find everything they need close to them. We knew from Helga that Hero and Lisa were still very shy and afraid of humans. I knew that they would just hide and feel scared, not knowing what’s going on. But at least they would be able to see/smell the food right there, see a kitty toilet nearby and have places to hide and toys to play with, should they feel like it.

The area where Hero and Lisa were let out of their carrier.

You can faintly see the little tabby boy Hero in that photo. Lisa was near Hero, but underneath that footstool. They stayed like that well into the night, and we left them, not wanting to bother them.

Ralph stayed up until about 3am, while I had gone to bed at midnight, feeling really tired. Of course, I could hardly sleep anyway, always listening for what the cats are up to, all of them. So in the early morning, about 5am, I got up to see what the kittens have been up to.

How Samantha, Murli and Sonic are reacting to Hero and Lisa

2019 11 06 5am Samantha seeing Lisa the first time
Lisa on the cat tree by the window. Samantha had just come in too and saw Lisa for the first time.

Lisa is hardly visible, but she’s on the kitty tree, at the second level from the top. Samantha had previously smelled them already, but that morning was the first time she saw one of the kittens. Lisa wasn’t really worried over there. Samantha was stunned, like she could not believe what she saw and wondered about what these kittens were doing in her home all of a sudden.

Samantha was very curious about them though, and she wasn’t too upset, behaving normally and doing everything she always does. She’s still coming to terms with new cats being in her home and getting used to it. It’s very similar to how it was when Murli and Samantha came together in this apartment the first time. Back then it took a few weeks for everything to become normal for her and Murli.

Murli is also very curious about the kittens, but she’s not upset one bit. She’s behaving exactly as she always does. She leaves them alone, and only watches them from, and sneaks after them, to peek around the corner at them.

Sonic is the way he is, a boy who doesn’t get upset easily. He also LOVES other cats and is always friendly to them, even if they hiss. So Sonic made friends with Hero right away, the first time they met nose to nose, they became brothers. He’s trying to get closer to Lisa as well, but she’s still a bit worried, but it’s getting much less every day. By now Sonic, Hero and Lisa hang out together on the bed with me in it!

In all, there haven’t been any big problems with Murli, Samantha and Sonic accepting the new family members. It’s all pretty like I expected it to be, knowing them.

Very late on the evening Hero and Lisa arrived, I decided I feel better with the balcony door secured. So in the dark, cold and pouring rain, I started putting a cat safety net onto the frame of the balcony door. I can easily put it up and remove it, but it’s safe, not even a kitten can squeeze past it. I just became too worried about the little ones suddenly running on the balcony and trying to climb the fencing and falling off the balcony. I will soon secure the whole balcony with a cat safety net, so that they can go out on the balcony safely. Up until now, the fencing I put on the balcony railing was enough, as we didn’t have to worry about Murli, Samantha and Sonic jumping onto the railing.

The first morning after their arrival, we hear them running around and playing in the living room for a while, before hiding under the footstool again for most of the day. But the next evening, about 24 hours after their arrival, they were starting to explore the apartment and played with all the cat toys along their way.

So I sat down on the floor in the hallway, and got them curious with a toy. They came closer and I was able to play with them for the first time!

2019 11 07 6-46pm Playing with Lisa nd Hero 1st time
Playing with Hero (left) and Lisa (right) for the first time!

Otherwise, the kittens were very shy and very afraid of humans. But we’re able to gain their trust slowly, every day a little bit more. During the first 4 days, they would run away as soon as we walked nearby. But that distance before they would run was getting shorter and shorter. Hero and Lisa were also starting to follow us, peeking around the corner to watch what we were doing.

Sonic started joining in when I was playing with the kittens, which is so awesome. The picture on the left is Hero and Lisa. The one on the right is Sonic and Hero.

And so the days went by, until it’s now more than a week since their arrival! These last two nights, Hero and Lisa even came up on our bed for a while. Last night, after going to bed, Hero and Lisa both cuddled up against my legs, which were under the blanket. It was so cute. Sonic was there as well, to the right of me, as he usually is. The following photos in the slideshow are from Tuesday, in the late evening. I was playing with them before going to sleep.

Samantha and Murli usually prefer their baskets, so it’s perfectly normal for them not to be on the bed anyway.

Hero and Lisa had lost their frightened expressions after the first two days pretty much. By now they are feeling so much more at home and enjoy watching Kitty-TV from the bedroom window. We’ve had constant rain, so the window looks mucky again even though I cleaned it about two weeks ago.

Hero is running just as fast as Lisa, despite having only 3 legs. He’s getting around so well! But I tried to help him out and make it a bit easier for him to get up on things, by putting in-between steps to higher up places, with chairs, cat ladders and footstools etc.

I also have a video of them playing around the kitty tree on Monday morning. It is a bit dark, as it was another awful dark day and I had only opened one side of the curtain, because the babies were sitting behind the other half, watching the street from the living room window. Later I sat down at my desk and these two started playing. So I just got the camera out and started filming anyway.

There is still more that I could write and post, but I will just put it in my next post. Every day is exciting now, with something new happening!

Like Hero and Lisa coming up to our hands most of the time now and sniffing. I’m really looking forward to them trusting us enough to give them a nice brush and cuddle.

Murli, Samantha and Sonic are getting just as much love as they always do. I love all of them so much! I’m now spoiling 5 cats and loving it! Ralph adores Hero and Lisa so much as well!

Love to all of you! Thank you so much for reading!

Sometimes, I can’t find a fitting title, so I just use the current date…

You might have heard about the heatwave in Europe? We did have a few really hot days, but it cooled down to normal levels again for this weekend. Though, the temperatures are rising again and according to the forecast, the coming week will be even hotter than the previous one.

With my ongoing quest to spoil the cats as much as possible, I wanted to create more shade for them on the balcony. So I ordered a cover for the railing, which will shade the floor of the balcony. I ordered this blue and white striped one, because I love things to be as colourful as possible.

Balcony - railing cover June 29, 2019

Of course, I could just mount a cover for the whole length of the balcony railing, but then the cats would not be able to see into the garden as easily. Therefore, I folded the cover in half and mounted it so the cats would still be able to look out on both ends easily. I left more uncovered on the right side, where the bird feeder is.

The mats I had previously used for shade were by now almost falling apart from taking them up and down constantly. With this balcony cover, I don’t have to worry about taking it down all the time, since it’s made for being outside. It’s working nicely and creates full shade.

The wooden privacy fence and the big blue umbrella together with the new cover make the balcony really comfortable and also more private, while still giving the cats enough unrestricted view to watch everything going on outside of the balcony.

The right end of the balcony, where the bird feeder is.

Then, while I was shopping yesterday morning, I discovered a mat that I knew would be great for the cats to lie on outside. It is quite long and makes it much softer and comfortable.

I still covered the mat with their blankies and they absolutely love it. They’re out on the balcony even more now!

The reason why we don’t really need an umbrella for the right side of our balcony is this very tall Sycamore tree. In the late afternoon, it will shade the whole balcony. Although there is a span of time where the right side is in full sun for a while, before the sun gets behind the tree, but it’s not too much of a problem.

Sweet little boy Sonic prefers to stay inside for the most part. He’s always been that way and usually only stays out on the balcony for a short time, unlike the two girls who stay out there for hours.

Sonic has his favourite spots and also loves to flop down wherever he feels like, even if he is totally blocking the way.

The nights at the moment

With the hot summer days, people leave their windows open all night, including us. It is normally absolutely quiet in our block, which is really amazing considering how many apartments there are. I can leave the bedroom window wide open all night and there is just no noise and it’s wonderful!

Or it was… The lovely quiet night has been broken up by the screaming and moaning of a woman, every night for the last week.

Edit: I forgot to clarify… It’s not a woman in pain btw… She’s at it with a man and it’s totally obvious, so that there’s no mistaking what’s going on. Seriously, it’s so annoying! We heard a man moaning for a while as well the other night, that’s why I know it’s a woman with a man.

It sounds like it’s coming from the ground floor level of the building next to our building. She is really loud and it will go on ALL NIGHT. She will start at like 1 or 2 am and then keep going until it’s morning. She will stop for maybe 15 minutes in between and then start up again. Of course, it keeps waking us up. I had to close the window last night, because we needed sleep, even though I would really need the fresh air overnight when it’s hot like that. It prevents getting a migraine from stuffy air.

Here is a google maps screenshot of the part of our block where our building is. I concealed the street name with the flowers lol. It’s just safer that way I think since you never know who finds your public images and blog.

Anyway, here it is:

Google Maps screenshot of our block

The blue arrow points to our building and the area of our apartment. The red arrow points to where the moaning comes from. We can’t see the building like that from our point of view, so we can’t be sure which apartment it comes from exactly, but it’s definitely this building.

It’s just crazy! I’m certain it won’t be any different tonight either. I’m currently thinking about what to do if it does not stop. I’ve heard other people calling out to them to keep it down, but she does not seem to care at all.

Some people…

Otherwise, we all have been doing well! I’m currently looking forward to getting all my pain medicine for 18 days, starting the coming Friday. This means I don’t have to pick up my bottles every afternoon from the pharmacy. Maybe we can go up on the mountain near Graz on one of those days and take lots of photos and videos! I love doing things together with Ralph, we always have such a lovely time, no matter what we do.

Have a wonderful rest of your Sunday everyone! The cats are sending out purrs and paw hugs!

February 17, 2018 – A little update about things just dragging out so much

Hello everyone! It’s been just really a long long while since my last post. I just can’t seem to feel motivated, because of anxiety and feeling a bit stressed. As you know, we’ve been trying to get married for months now, and every time it seems, we are being sent away, because there’s something else that is required by the law.

It would have been easier somewhat, if at least they could have told us what exactly we need to get all at once, instead of bit by bit every time we come back. Especially with things we need to get from the embassy in Vienna. It’s not exactly right around the corner and it’s not cheap to get there either.

If we would have been told everything we need to get, we could have done so when we were at the embassy in December. But in the office, they just tell us “Oh you just simply go to the embassy for that…”

Like the first time we’ve been to the registry office in Graz, where we’ve been told we need to get the certificate from the British embassy that confirms that Ralph is free to marry and that all his papers / documents are genuine. The other thing we’ve been told is that we need to have Ralph’s documents translated into German. I even asked if it has to be a special translator, like a court-approved one and I got the answer “No, it just needs to be simply translated into German and I can get that done by whomever I want “. That was all.

It took us a couple of weeks until we were able to go to Vienna. But eventually, we went to the British embassy in Vienna to get the certificate, which is called “Ehefähigkeitszeugnis” in German. Roughly translated it would be “MarriageAbilityCertificate”. The British embassy also specified that the document they give out is the “Ehefähigkeitszeugnis” and that they give out hundreds of them every year in Austria when a Brit marries an Austrian.

So, after that, we sorted out the translation of the divorce and marriage certificates of Ralph, except for his birth certificate, since we thought it’s silly to translate that, as it’s so obvious and easy to understand since its simply names and birth dates and places.

After that, we went back to the registry office in the end of January, and then suddenly, we were told that Ralph might have to get a new birth certificate and that it probably needs to be translated as well. The first time we’ve been at the registry office, the same person had seen us and that person did not say anything about the birth certificate eventually having to be new, even though they looked at it back then as well. Upon asking where we would get a new birth certificate, the answer was like I wrote above “You just simply go to the embassy in Vienna for that.” Why could they not mention that the first time? We can’t simply go to Vienna like that all the time, not to mention that it’s expensive.

But on that day, they took in our documents and everything and they said it might be fine like that anyway. We were told that the registrar would contact us.

And that contact happened this Friday, the 16th of February, via email to me. In that email, it said that there were some more documents needed for us to be able to get married.

So we need to get all the English documents translated by an official translator who would be court. As well, we need to get an Apostille for each of Ralph’s documents, which we can hopefully get via mail from the British government. But it seems like we can do that according to the British government website. I think it’s about 50£ for each Apostille.

Nothing about needing an Apostille was mentioned the previous times we have been there. Nothing at all.

Not even on their website. But it’s in the state laws, but how are we to know. You would think that the registry office would know and tell you everything that is needed.

But the last thing listed as being needed was exactly the document we had already given them, the certificate from the British embassy in Vienna.

Upset, I wrote back right away, explaining that we had already given them that document and that they should have it. And to let me know what’s up with that.

Later on, the person called me, telling me that the document was found, but that they’re not sure it will be accepted as “Ehefähigkeitszeugnis”. Seems like they haven’t seen it before. Apparently no British / Austrian marriages in my city, otherwise they would have known it. The embassy gives those out all the time and they’re accepted just fine in the rest of Austria apparently.

The thing is, that Austria is a bit similar to the US in the way that there’s federal law and state laws. Each state has their own laws to some degree.

But still, it’s an official document, it’s the exact thing they wanted. That’s just the way the British one is. Every countries documents look different. That’s what you get from them and we would not get anything different from the embassy, even if they won’t accept it.

I have been seriously thinking about getting married in England now and I will be looking into it. Since Ralph and I live here, I don’t know if it would be possible to just go to Ralph’s home country England, just to get married and then back to Austria again. But I will find out.

It might even work out easier and cheaper.

Though, I will get a call on Thursday, where we will be informed if the embassy certificate will be accepted or not.

So we will see.

Sigh… I’m really upset and Ralph is really upset. Even the cats were upset when we were totally upset on Friday, since they pick up the worried feelings up from us.

We feel a little better today, but not by much. We don’t sleep right, as it’s constantly in our minds.

I would have not been too upset about the other things, but that the highly official certificate from the British embassy might not be accepted, that’s just something we would have never expected.

We love each other so much, and we want to be family and married. It’s security also, as once we’re married, we have rights. If something were to happen to either of us, we would have no right to speak to doctors or make decisions we know that the other would want. And most of all, we found in each other the love of our lives, and we want to be husband and wife forever.

We’re about to go to sleep now lol. I hope that this blog post will help me feel better since I could get it out like that.

Otherwise, we’re happy and healthy, as are our 3 kitties 😽😽😽

I will reply to the sweet comments tomorrow and post a couple more uplifting things, like cat pictures!😸 Yay!

Thanks everyone for reading and for being the lovely kind friends that you are.

Night, night from Ralph, Murli, Samantha, Sonic and me☺️😽😽😽☺️✨🌙💤💤💤💤💤

March 7, 2017 Murli stressed out by noisy road work

Hello my dear furends! I haven’t really slept this night either, even though I feel better today. At least compared to how sick I felt over the weekend.

Anyway, this morning we suddenly had a construction site right in front and around one corner of our apartment building. They are apparently starting to renew the pavement. So they use a jack-hammer to get the old stuff out. OMG, it’s so loud! The whole house was vibrating and the noise was resonating through everything.

Here is what it sounds like with the window closed:

Here is what it sounds like directly in the street. Even though I filmed this in the later afternoon and at that point they were already around the corner, which made it slightly less loud. It was worse before. It was already 3:30pm when they went around the corner. The jack-hammer was being used non stop from 8am until 5pm, except for one hour during their lunch break at noon.

Poor Murli was so afraid, she didn’t even knew what to do anymore. She ran through the whole apartment with a bushy tail, again and again, seemingly not feeling comfortable to stay anywhere. Even though she has numerous hiding spots, they weren’t enough for her this morning. I think it’s the intense vibrations that make it worse. Cats have much more sensitive nerves in their paws than we do. It’s so they can feel the smallest little movement, like a mouse walking. Their hearing of course is also much more sensitive. They especially dislike noises in the deeper spectrum. I’m sure that she heard a lot more that we couldn’t hear. I’m sure she isn’t just feeling these vibrations much more intensely, but I can imagine that’s accompanied by an additional noise as well. She never heard a jack-hammer so close by.

Even though  I was worried about Murli, and my heart was aching seeing her scared like that, I tried to not show my worry and did everything just like usual. Because if she sees me acting different, it would just add to her fears. If she sees me behaving like all the time, she realizes that the situation in our home itself is safe and nothing is wrong. Murli always notices when I become nervous or afraid, which causes her to feel on edge as well.

She didn’t leave my side at all the whole day. We are already always together, but today much more so. She stayed close to me. Then I saw her sitting underneath the drying rack, which had a big blanket on top. Then I got the idea that I get one of her boxes, and put it under that thing.

This is the box under the drying rack, before I put the big blanket over it, so it was like a tent around her box.

March 7 2017 - 2

I also put one of her beloved Valerian root pouches into the box for her, because it seems to calm her somewhat. This was shortly after Murli got into her box. The little Valerian root pouch is between her front paws. I sat right there with her. First at the desk. But then I sat down on the floor, in front of the drying rack, with my coffee and iPad. We stayed like this until noon, when I used the quiet of the construction workers lunch break to get into bed for a nap. Murli went right after me and jumped into bed as well.

March 7 2017 - 1

I always take her blankies into bed with us for her to cuddle on:

March 7 2017 - 3

I took this photo when I got up again. Murli was able to rest at least, despite the noise. I didn’t really sleep either, but I needed the rest anyway. Btw, when we sleep like that, she likes to curl right into the back of my knees. My legs were bent around her back. She always tries to curl herself as close as possible to me. It’s so cute.

She even stayed in bed after I got up. But not for long. Thankfully, at 5pm, the jack-hammer finally stopped. After Murli ate, she got into bed again. Since then she sleeps, which is no wonder. I feel quite sleepy myself lol. Probably because the sleepless night and the flu.

So hopefully I’ll finally sleep normally tonight. Hugs & love to all, from both of us❤️️

March 5, 2017 Fluweekend

It’s almost 3pm now, and my fever is gone for now, so I feel much better. Lol, now I can also see what I’m typing without the letters being some strange kind of fuzziness. Murli and I got up from a long nap before. I didn’t get much sleep this night, because of alternating between fever dreams and lying awake without finding a comfortable position as everything hurt. That’s all a lot better for now.

I’ve generally been feeling really well the whole week, aside from migraines. No anxiety, no above normal pain issues, no fatigue issues, nothing, except the migraine, but as long as I have my Triptan, I can deal with them. And then I had to get the flu lol. So many friends (online and offline) were sick with the flu or worse (sinusitis, tonsillitis, full blown influenca, pneumonia and bronchitis), and I hope all of you are feeling much better!

The weather is still kina unstable. It varies between sunny and warm spring weather and stormy, cloudy and cool weather. There was a slight stormy wind going on over night, but nothing serious. The winds were between 30 kph and 25 kph (18 mph – 15 mph).

Yesterday morning, it was very much like spring, and Murli enjoyed “kitty TV” on the “IRL bird channel” at the window. Those little sparrows are especially active right now and they’re so adorable. Murli really enjoyed the sun too as you can see:

Later in the afternoon, I had to get a few groceries, despite feeling very dizzy and sick, but Papa was even worse and I wouldnt let him go out like that. So I went, and the wind was blowing even worse than later over night, with 40 kph – 45 kph  (24 mph – 27 mph). So dizzy me had trouble walking against the wind direction lol. But I couldn’t help but take photos of the sky as I went over a bridge (the rivers water levels are still quite low):

March 4 2017 3:02pm

March 4 2017 3:03pm

And since I was grocery shopping, I thought I show you all my shopping bag cart thingy. Since I’m a sane catlady (just crazy in the eyes of non cat-people probably) I have lots of cat themed things:

img_02211

Me just luvz stuff like that MOL! And its pawsome for getting groceries and stuff, as I can’t really carry to much due to my joint and back problems. It’s Murli approved too! She rubbes her fluffy little head into the shopping cart all the time 😺💕

Hugs & love to all of you furends😺💕 Murli and I wish you all a comfy Sunday!
