Hello dear friends! I hope you and your loved ones are all well! I continue to feel great! But I’ve been seriously busy every day, with just the usual chores, that are more exhausting due to the heatwaves we’ve been having. The heat would not be a problem, as it’s not extremely hot compared to other places, but the humidity is through the roof constantly.
The kitties, who love to hang out on the balcony cation when it’s nice, have been flopping all over the place during the day.
Eating and drinking is done as comfortable as possible…
Aside from the humid heat, we’ve had a couple of really severe thunderstorms, with unbelievable amounts of rain, high winds and hail.
The storm in the video below came through in the afternoon of August 14, 2020. It rained so heavily at times, that all you saw was white when looking out of the windows.
The flower tray below, filled up within 15 minutes, if not sooner and was then simply overflowing. It was empty because I took the flower pot with my Lavender out of it before the storm.
We’ve had some severe thunderstorms here, but I’ve never seen that amount of rain within such a short time.
The leaves on all the trees and bushes look like they’ve stood in a war zone. They are completely ripped to shreds by the few hail storms we’ve had recently. The leaves are just shreds or have multiple round holes in them.
The photo below is from August the 5th, after just one severe thunderstorm with hail. It’s the bush to the right of our balcony. By now they look much worse and are simply shredded. I still need to take photographs of how it looks currently.
Though as I mentioned, for the most part, all of August has been very hot. In the morning and the late afternoon, the kitties and I love to hang out on the balcony catio. It’s just lovely.
In the following photos, it’s pretty much obvious that it’s really hot and humid. The kitties are just simply totally flat out and try not to move at all.
Thankfully the living room window is always a cool spot. The sun moves to the west and the whole street is in the shade after midday. But even before then it’s lovely and cool. There’s always a nice breeze and the cats just love to watch what’s going on out there.
These blinds are absolutely wonderful in creating shade and keeping the heat out. The living room and the bedroom are always nice and cool. The old wooden shutters on the bedroom window keep the bedroom perfectly cool, even though the sun is on them all afternoon. It’s quite amazing.
In other news
I’m full of ideas.. and there are so many things I enjoy doing and want to do. Like crocheting and learning how to sew clothes. It’s all a slow progress, as my energy allowance for each day is rather low and easily used up. I will find a way to sort it all out and plan my days a bit better. Now that my migraines aren’t as frequent, I want to do all kinds of things at the same time. There are also about a million jobs to do just around the home, like organising the wardrobe in the bedroom, the books, paperwork and bits and pieces in the living room and the kitchen.
Although all of the mentioned comes after what’s most important: Ralph and the cats, all daily tasks, then the blog and all the wonderful friends we made. Love and friendship are where I get my energy from!
I will leave you with this photo-filled post now and we wish you all a lovely Sunday evening! Big hugs and purrs!
Like almost all over Europe, it’s been mainly cold, windy and rainy this spring. Again and again, the alps got snow, and the temperatures dropped as the ice cold wind came through. We did have a few really nice and war days, but they were usually just a day between rain and cold.
Cats all over miss the sun, as do their humans. Ralph especially does not like the cold and so we keep the heat going. It’s just that sometimes I have to turn down the heat, because I get hot so easily, but then Ralph feels a bit chilly. The heating we have is awesome and really creates a lovely warm apartment. So it’s all lovely and nice in our home. But the cats, especially Murli, would love to be able to go in and out onto the balcony as they please, but it’s too cold to leave the balcony door open. The same goes for the windows. I put a cat safety net on the windows in the summer, so I can leave them open and the cats can hang out there, enjoying the fresh air and the sun.
I always think about what else I can do to make the cats happy, so I got them a board with a cushion on it (this one), to create an even surface for them to lie on. Because the window sill on our living room window isn’t even and has different levels. This window design is typical for old buildings like ours here. This is what it looks like:
And now with the cushion board, they have a comfy little place to relax or watch what’s going on outside:
I have to wrap a towel around it, because otherwise Samantha would rip the cushion to shreds lol.
But isn’t she a sweetheart? She loves it on there. After I took this picture, I filmed her for a bit as well:
(Excuse the dirty window. We just had a construction site creating a lot of dust, and then it rained…) She loves the soft board and now she can finally lie down at the living room window properly. it’s lovely to see that happy little girl ❤ Murli and Sonic enjoy it just as much.
The other new things I got for them are two water fountains / water dispensers for cats. Because it keeps the water clean all day. The absolutely love it and drink even more than before. It’s awesome. Sonic is the one who has the longest drinks and so it was easy to take a picture with him drinking.
Murli, Samantha and Sonic are all doing really well with their medicines. They are all happy and feeling their best. Murli is back to normal now, full of life again, happy and talkig a lot, and following me around. She is really busy watching the birds at the moment. I feed them and have two bird feeders, one in the bushes and the other on the metal pole for our washing line on the balcony, so it’s not right in or near the balcony. Murli is out there as much as possible right now with the cold. But we did have a few warm days, like when I did this video of her.
It’s purrfect kitty TV for Murli. Thankfully she does not try to jump up to get to the birds, she just likes to watch them and talks to them. Samantha and Sonic would not jump at them either.
Today, the icy wind is still blowing, it’s cloudy and dark and it will probably rain again. We all are waiting for the summer and hope it will come eventually. It’s still spring now anyway, even if it does not seem like it with snow on the surrounding mountains… The following images are of the webcam that is located on a nearby mountain, that’s just outside of the city and about 1400m. That’s why it’s so cold.
I want to go up there with Ralph in the summer, because it’s lovely and I haven’t been up there since my childhood. There’s a restaurant up there which serves awesome sweet things as well. You get up there by cable car, which I really look forward to. The times I was up there as a kid, we walked up or we got taken up by car. So it will be my first time with that cable car, and I’m sure to film and take pictures of it all.
Hope you’re all well! Ralph, the kitties and myself wish everyone a nice day ❤
… and I haven’t even been posting since late spring!
Hey dear friends! Yes, it’s been a really long time, shame on me. Though, there wasn’t really a day I haven’t been thinking about many of the friends I made through this blog, and about how much I miss to post. Especially, I sometimes would just like to write little everyday blog posts, to remember them and to share them with you. Maybe that’s how I should do it, so it’s just a part of daily life. Even if I have days with migraine, I could still do something little. There are so many of you and other bloggers, who have so much more to deal with than I do, and they still post constantly.
Almost a whole year with Ralph in Austria
Anyways, the months just raced by since Ralph and I got married and we would like for time to go a bit slower. Maybe it’s because we’re just really happy! In addition, it’s almost a year now that Ralph, Samantha and Sonic arrived in Austria! It was way past midnight on September 16, 2017 that I picked them up at the airport in Vienna. Since then we’ve been together every day and enjoyed it all, except for crazy bureaucracy of course…
On October 4, it will be a year that we’ve been in our apartment, our home!
Bad weather all year
It was a rather rainy spring and summer, with the temperatures way below of what they normally are. So it was a big difference for Ralph, coming from the lovely warm southern Spain to southern Austria, where it started off as a very cold and rainy fall late 2017, then turned into a very very cold and snowy winter that lasted till March, and the spring and summer were like I said rainy and too cool. That whole year was nothing like it normally would be here. Hopefully, it will be back to normal next year…
We also had a couple bad storms in the early summer. One afternoon, I just barely made it into our building, when the hail started falling behind me, with hailstones as big as golf balls… Another storm came through the same month, and the storm wind ripped off flat metal roofs, big trees fell and even the tree in our garden is now just half of what it was.
The photos in the following slideshow show the damage of that storm in the park near our home. It looked like this all over Graz though.
Murli had her birthday on August 17! She turned 13. Since Ralph doesn’t know the exact date of Samantha and Sonics birth date, I decided to make August 17 the birthday of Samantha and Sonic as well. All three got special treats and food all day and the next.
Unfortunately, by the end of August, I noticed Murli had her little tongue out slightly all evening and didn’t close her mouth completely, but I could not see anything, and she was eating normally too. The next morning I saw that her lower left fang was leaning all the way to the left. It was obviously loose, as it wasn’t like that the night before. We had no idea what was going on, or how it happened. The only thing we could think of was that she might have had an accident while jumping. Murli acted completely normal, was not in any pain, as she kept eating without avoiding one side.
But it had to be taken care of so I called our Vet Lady to make an appointment for Murli.
We took a Taxi to the Vet, as it was a bit of a distance from home. As long as Murli is in a carrier she’s fine and not upset. She only gets upset the moment she smells that she’s at the Vet, poor little girl… She wasn’t allowed any food all morning, due to the possibility of sedation.
The Vet and I rolled Murli all up in a blanket to keep her still while she was checked out. The tooth was very loose, and the Vet said she’ll see how Murli reacts and if there is any resistance she will have to be sedated. But Murli didn’t even flinch, it didn’t seem to hurt her, and the tooth was almost falling out by itself. Apparently, Murli must have had toothache a while ago, for quite some time, as the root of the fang had already dissolved. I was quite shocked hearing that, as Murli never acted strangely all these months. She always ate normally, her tail was up all the time and never gave any reason to worry. Normally I notice any little change in her and know when something isn’t right, just not this time.
In addition, the Vet also did blood work, and the results were perfect, except for her liver values, which were slightly elevated. So she got tablets for that, which I give her once a day (she loves them, as they taste like treats). Murli has always had problems with reacting badly to all kinds of cat foods. There isn’t much that she won’t throw up or the the runs from and it was like that since she was a kitten. She has some great food though that she is doing fine with. She also loves anything with milk… Icecream, cream, yoghurt etc. But I now take extra good care that she won’t eat anything except her own food, as anything else could be a reason for the elevated values. In a few weeks, I’ll bring Murli to the Vet again, for another blood test. Then we’ll see if anything has changed. So we’ll see.
There is a difference now, after the tooth is gone. Murli seems to be really relaxed and even more happy than before. So she must have been in pain in some way before, even if she didn’t really show it, or act like she was. It’s quite obvious now with how relaxed she seems. I feel so bad that I had no idea anything was going on with her. The tooth looked even normal before, you would have never guessed anything is wrong with it.
A few hours later after we’ve been at the Vet, Murli was really happy and having a good stretch up on the fridge ❤
As for Sonic and Samantha? They are doing purrfectly fine! We thankfully have gotten some sunny weather now, so the three of them catch up on getting some sun on the balcony.
Especially Murli and Samantha are out on the balcony all the time. Lets hope we’ll have a sunny and rather warm late summer and fall, would be nice!
As of now, I’m writing on another post, and I want to try to post a lot more, even if it’s just tiny little posts or pictures. Documenting life, our life with the cats and whatever else.
Ralph and I want to do a couple things for our apartment. Make it really pretty and get all the lamps and pictures up. It’s lovely already, but there are still some things left that need to be done. I’ll take pictures of it for sure.
There’s also a really weird neighbour that I want to write about…
I think I’ve rambled on for long enough now…
Have a lovely rest of the week everyone! Much love from Ralph, the cats and me!
Hey furends! Where do I even start after having been busy so much that I just didn’t manage posting. I guess first of all, we are both doing well! Murli is happy, talkative, playful and cuddly as always😸 The weather changed from a mostly cool spring, to summer heat within a short period of time. Of course with the usual high humidity we always have in summer. It started to warm up in mid May and on May 19 we had 84°F or 29°C, but it cooled down the next day due to a cold front and the temperatures remained in the lower 70°F or lower 20°C. On May 29, the temperatures went to 84°F or 29°C again and by the next day they increased to 89°F or 31°C. At first it wasn’t really that humid, and so it was not really uncomfortable and we did well with it. It didn’t take long however, for humidity to rise to 80% and more, especially in the late afternoon and during the night.
So Murli and I are currently adjusting to the temperatures, since we are not used to them yet. The temperatures later in summer will be a bit higher, with often 95°F or 35°C with high humidity. There will be days where it goes up to 100°F or 37°C. Murli lies on the cool floor during the day now, or she naps at the open windows. When I get into bed to take a nap, she will jump into bed right away to nap next to me, but after a while she’ll feel too warm and she gets down on the floor. The thing is, she’ll come into bed again and again, because she really loves to sleep next to me. But she always has to get down again, since she’s too warm. I gave her a thin bedsheet. It feels cool to the touch and is made of linen. I use those in the summer all the time. I put a couple of them on her daytime nap places.
Here is a video of Murli from today at 10am.
The birds are very active, and the south windows are just comfy to
relax on. I made it so she has shade there for most of the day. Murli is
chatty like usual. She talks like this with me if I cuddle and pet her,
and anytime I interact with her in some way. I talk to and with her all day,
and we're both very chatty MOL!
Yesterday in the early evening at about 6pm, a bad thunderstorm came through, with lots of hail unfortunately. The hail started shortly after the rain had set in and it kept going for good 10 minutes. After that the hail stopped, and the rain changed to a light rainfall. But the frequent and closeby lightning kept going till about 8pm. As always, I had to get Murli off the window, because she loves watching the hail. I’m always totally protective of her, and don’t want her near the windows when its bad. You never know if the glass could break if the hail gets bad enough (happened last year to many windows in the street). After I got Murli off the window, I started filming. And at that point, the hail increased as well.
In the beginning of the video, I added a short time lapse and a few photos I took
before the actual rain and hail started.
Thankfully, the hail wasn’t that bad all over the city. Because I was really sad at first, thinking the newly planted flowers on my Mamas grave and my Grandparents grave were now all destroyed. Dad went there to take a look today, and they were all fine. A friend of our family told us that the hail was pretty much harmless a in other areas of the city. So glad for that!
As for today… the weather was sunny again, as well as humid and hot. But we took a nap during the hottest part of the day, and have a comfy afternoon and evening now. Murli also got one of her favorite treats, which is Turkey ham. She prefers Turkey ham over normal ham… by far. She absolutely loves it. And I love making her happy!
Also, this weekend is a long weekend, because Monday is a holiday (Whit Monday). We make it a relaxed but fun weekend at home. Murli already had her FridayNightBagPawty yesterday. For today, she’ll be getting a new bag! It’s from Aldi, and bigger MOL! Of course there will be pictures of it all😆😸
Happy Caturday to all of you lovely furends!💕 We send you all love & paw hugs! Thank you all for reading and posting those sweet comments! You’re all wonderful!😽😘💕
Yay! Today is the first day of me feeling normal and awake again. For the past two weeks, I had been ill again… Due to a bout of the shingles, which thankfully were not bad. I had chicken pox as a child, so since then I had that Virus in me. In the first days before anything became apparent, I had severe fatigue and I just didn’t feel right at all. Then at the end of the Easter weekend, the rash started, but just a very small area on the right side over my ribs. Went to the doctor right after the Easter weekend and got a Antiviral and pain meds prescribed. Thankfully the antiviral medicine was able to prevent it from actually breaking out fully, since the treatment was started early enough, and because it was a mild case.
The medicine made me very tired though. As long as I did something I was ok, but as soon as I would sit down and start to read or write, my eyes wanted to close. Many times over the last week, have I fallen asleep while sitting on the couch with my ipad… Hilarious!
I’m finally feeling fully awake again today. Hopefully I’ll have a good phase without migraines for a bit, because there’s so much I want to do and I’m looking forward to be able to catch up with all of your lovely blogs, as well as with all our furends on instagram and twitter ❤️️
Murli is doing purrfect! But she’d love to have more days with comfortable temperatures and sun puddles to nap in. Unfortunately, our weather here in Austria, and other parts of Europe, continue to have unusually cold weather. First there was the stormy and cold weather I wrote about. Then a few days with milder temperatures and a bit of sun followed. The Foehn wind was howling again on Tuesday and brought warm air from the south. The next day, the Foehn wind was gone, but the temperatures were falling again, which created more wind, just not Foehn wind. Today it’s grey, dark and rainy. The mountains are also getting snow again and it’s possible that we’ll get some of it as well.
But we will enjoy a cuddly and comfy weekend. Murli on my lap, and a coffee next to me, I’m not complaining at all. The only thing I worry about is how animal and plant life are coping with that kind of weather.
Here is a video I took on Tuesday, as the Foehn Wind was howling through the door. Murli isn’t afraid of those things, as they’re happening all the time and she’s used to it all. But her little nose is sniffing into the air, as the air current brings all kinds of smells with it I’m sure😸
In the video, Murli is about to get her meal, and she knows of course. I was about to go into the kitchen, when I decided to film that howling of the wind. I’m kind of sure she’s thinking what I’m doing there filming the door, instead of getting her meal ready lol…
I also wanted to show you one of the trees that grow on the river bank, that had fallen during those stormy days after the Easter weekend. I came across that fallen tree on my way to a grocery store. There were many fallen trees more along the river banks. But I’m kind of sure that the trees that did fall due to the wind, were already weakened in some way. (You can click on the images to see them in a larger view)
I also found a left over Christmas tree 😂😹 I had to think of Siddhartha Henry’s LadyMum Sherri-Ellen of nylabluesmum.wordpress.com when I saw that Christmas tree, because we were talking about exactly this kind of thing shortly after Christmas and how people throw Christmas trees down the river banks and into rivers and all kinds of other places lol.
Hope you all are doing fine! Murli and I wish you all a pleasant Thursday!
