What a week! Constipated Sonic emergency.

Sonic

First the most important thing: He’s been fine since after the Vet visit. He’s a happy Sonic again, flopping all over the apartment as always.

Originally, I started to write a post for Tuesday, which I never got to finish because Sonic became unwell due to sudden acute obstipation.

It started during the night from Monday to Tuesday. I woke up to Sonic being very restless. He was up and down from the bed, going to the toilet and back up on the bed again. He did it repeatedly, so I got up with him and noticed he was straining to have a bowel movement. He was really trying hard, but nothing would happen. This went on for a while, but eventually Sonic curled up beside me and we all fell asleep.

As I got up the next morning, I came into the living room to Sonic happily playing with one of the strings they have hanging around the place. He also ate and drank properly and because I had put more of his medicine in his food that morning, I was hoping it would resolve itself.

Later that same Tuesday morning we also had a Lady come by who had a look at our bathroom tiles, so she can prepare the right ones for us when they come to change the tap in the shower.

It was all very busy that morning and into the afternoon. But at around 2pm I tried to have a little nap, and Sonic was with me on the bed as well. We slept for a little while, but then I woke up to him straining to have a bowel movement again. The periods of rest between him trying became much shorter, until he was basically straining the whole time, even while being on the bed. I think he was becoming really exhausted. His back legs were moving and kicking and he was unable to relax at all anymore.

He also started feeling hot to the touch and he was now complaining when trying to press out a bowel movement, without anything happening. He was glowing hot and seemed to get weak. He got worse quickly suddenly.

I knew I have to get him to the Vet instantly. I called our Vet office, which was closing at that time of day, to ask which Vet would be on call for emergencies right now. But instead, the Vet told us to come over right away and he’ll wait for us. Our Vet office has two Vets. The Lady Vet is doing the mornings and the male Vet is doing the late afternoons. I know both of them, and he is just as great and kind.

My hands were shaking, my heart pounding in my head, I was so worried about our sweet boy. I picked Sonic up from the bed and put him into the carrier and called a Taxi, which thankfully came within just a minute.

Sonic was complaining loudly all the way to the Vet about being in the carrier. Since he can’t hear me talking to him, I just put my hand into the carrier and laid it on him, which helped. Traffic was thankfully not bad anymore, since it was more than half an hour after the evening rush hour. We arrived in maybe 6 minutes.

At the Vet

Sonic in the carrier, just as I got in the door at the Vet office and put him down on a little chair. The carrier is the wrong way around… There are windows with netting on both ends and on the other side of it, as well as on the top

Just after I got in and put the carrier down, the Vet already came to us to take us into the examination room. Sonic was put on the examination table and checked out, while I was right there, next to him. The Vet hooked Sonic up to a drip for rehydration and then a bit later, two tiny cat size appropriate enemas were given.

Sonic was just lying on his side with his head in my hand, which he always likes to do, while we had to wait for the medicine to do its work inside his digestive tract. He was obviously totally exhausted. But even if he weren’t exhausted, Sonic is always relaxed and patient at the Vet. He never complains or struggles. He’s the most patient cat.

After the medicine had enough time to work, the Vet started massaging Sonics tummy. It took a bit of effort for Sonic, but eventually, the whole problem was resolved and that poor boy was relieved of his blockage. The Vet even gave Sonic a big clean up with warm running water, cat shampoo and then dried him off. Even with that, he remained as calm as anything.

Then as the carrier got put on the table, Sonic just went in by himself right away. He’s had enough at that point, I’m sure. Though he must have felt so much better already.

The Vet gave us some more medicine that helps with Peristalsis in the digestive tract. I have to put 0.3ml in his mouth with a little syringe three times a day.

In  addition, I’ll give him the fibre-rich dry food again. I had stopped giving it because Sonic kept throwing up from it. But the Vet explained to me why that was likely happening… The fibre-rich food was being digested in his stomach quite quickly and easily, but then could not move on fast enough out of his stomach into his intestines, because it was working too slow, which then caused him to throw it back up.

Now with the medicine and smaller portions, he seems to keep it down just fine! Which is a good sign that his intestines are now working better.

How Sonic is doing now

Sonic the next morning, after the Vet. He was still tired, but obviously feeling well and comfy now.

Sonic was already feeling so much better right after we got home from the Vet at about 8pm. His temperature had already dropped down to almost normal again and he was flopping down on the floor, as he always likes to do. Then he just went to sleep and slept all the way through to the next morning.

The next day he was already up for playing again, feeling hungry and drinking properly. He was fine and a happy little kitty boy again!

He’s been going to the toilet without a problem since and is all back to normal.

So how did it come to this?

Sonic needs a bit of medicine on his dry food that helps his digestion work properly. Unfortunately, he refuses to eat wet food. I tried and tried, he does not want to know anything about it. So dry food it is, although it’s high-quality dry food. He drinks plenty of water, so he’s well hydrated normally.

Now I am sure I know what happened that it came to this… Samantha must have eaten his medicated dry food. The medicine is a syrup that gets put right on top of his food, and normally he’s already waiting to have his food when I put it down. But he was not feeling that hungry I guess, so I just put it down for him. Samantha must have gotten to that food before Sonic did, without me noticing… I put Sonic’s dry food WAY OUT of Samantha’s path. His food is right next to our bed, on my side of it and normally it works out like that.

Samantha must have eaten Sonic’s medicated food on Sunday and Monday, because she had a light case of the runs on Monday morning and Tuesday morning.

The next problem was that Sonic did not drink like he usually does. In fact, I think none of the cats drank normally Sunday to Tuesday. I have a feeling that the extremely high humidity we have right now made them less thirsty. They might have felt like their throats aren’t feeling dry ever and did not feel the need to drink as much.

This combined must have Sonic caused to get severely blocked up.

Now I learned more and will make sure that nothing like this happens again. We already have two cat fountains that they all love to drink out of. But I think I’ll add another small one, which I will move around.

I found that putting a water bowl somewhere on a new spot will make the cats curious about it and then drink out of it, just because it’s suddenly right there. Having more water bowls around generally always helps. With Sonic, Samantha and Murli I found that their water intake increased by a lot after we got the water fountains.

It’s so wonderful to see him feel happy and well again. We have a beautiful sunny summer day today! Murli is out on the balcony and Samantha at the window in the living room, enjoying the sun. Sonic is wandering around the apartment after he having a little play fight with Samantha.

Have a lovely Caturday! Love from me and the cats!

Oh no, the summer is almost over…

… and I haven’t even been posting since late spring!

Hey dear friends! Yes, it’s been a really long time, shame on me. Though, there wasn’t really a day I haven’t been thinking about many of the friends I made through this blog, and about how much I miss to post. Especially, I sometimes would just like to write little everyday blog posts, to remember them and to share them with you. Maybe that’s how I should do it, so it’s just a part of daily life. Even if I have days with migraine, I could still do something little. There are so many of you and other bloggers, who have so much more to deal with than I do, and they still post constantly.

Almost a whole year with Ralph in Austria

Anyways, the months just raced by since Ralph and I got married and we would like for time to go a bit slower. Maybe it’s because we’re just really happy! In addition, it’s almost a year now that Ralph, Samantha and Sonic arrived in Austria! It was way past midnight on September 16, 2017 that I picked them up at the airport in Vienna. Since then we’ve been together every day and enjoyed it all, except for crazy bureaucracy of course…

On October 4, it will be a year that we’ve been in our apartment, our home!

Bad weather all year

It was a rather rainy spring and summer, with the temperatures way below of what they normally are. So it was a big difference for Ralph, coming from the lovely warm southern Spain to southern Austria, where it started off as a very cold and rainy fall late 2017, then turned into a very very cold and snowy winter that lasted till March, and the spring and summer were like I said rainy and too cool. That whole year was nothing like it normally would be here. Hopefully, it will be back to normal next year…

We also had a couple bad storms in the early summer. One afternoon, I just barely made it into our building, when the hail started falling behind me, with hailstones as big as golf balls… Another storm came through the same month, and the storm wind ripped off flat metal roofs, big trees fell and even the tree in our garden is now just half of what it was.

The photos in the following slideshow show the damage of that storm in the park near our home. It looked like this all over Graz though.

The Cats

Murli had her birthday on August 17! She turned 13. Since Ralph doesn’t know the exact date of Samantha and Sonics birth date, I decided to make August 17 the birthday of Samantha and Sonic as well. All three got special treats and food all day and the next.

Unfortunately, by the end of August, I noticed Murli had her little tongue out slightly all evening and didn’t close her mouth completely, but I could not see anything, and she was eating normally too. The next morning I saw that her lower left fang was leaning all the way to the left. It was obviously loose, as it wasn’t like that the night before. We had no idea what was going on, or how it happened. The only thing we could think of was that she might have had an accident while jumping. Murli acted completely normal, was not in any pain, as she kept eating without avoiding one side.

But it had to be taken care of so I called our Vet Lady to make an appointment for Murli.

Murli at the Vet to have her tooth sorted out
Murli in her bag, not happy to be at the Vet

We took a Taxi to the Vet, as it was a bit of a distance from home. As long as Murli is in a carrier she’s fine and not upset. She only gets upset the moment she smells that she’s at the Vet, poor little girl… She wasn’t allowed any food all morning, due to the possibility of sedation.

The Vet and I rolled Murli all up in a blanket to keep her still while she was checked out. The tooth was very loose, and the Vet said she’ll see how Murli reacts and if there is any resistance she will have to be sedated. But Murli didn’t even flinch, it didn’t seem to hurt her, and the tooth was almost falling out by itself. Apparently, Murli must have had toothache a while ago, for quite some time, as the root of the fang had already dissolved. I was quite shocked hearing that, as Murli never acted strangely all these months. She always ate normally, her tail was up all the time and never gave any reason to worry. Normally I notice any little change in her and know when something isn’t right, just not this time.

In addition, the Vet also did blood work, and the results were perfect, except for her liver values, which were slightly elevated. So she got tablets for that, which I give her once a day (she loves them, as they taste like treats). Murli has always had problems with reacting badly to all kinds of cat foods. There isn’t much that she won’t throw up or the the runs from and it was like that since she was a kitten. She has some great food though that she is doing fine with. She also loves anything with milk… Icecream, cream, yoghurt etc. But I now take extra good care that she won’t eat anything except her own food, as anything else could be a reason for the elevated values.  In a few weeks, I’ll bring Murli to the Vet again, for another blood test. Then we’ll see if anything has changed. So we’ll see.

There is a difference now, after the tooth is gone. Murli seems to be really relaxed and even more happy than before. So she must have been in pain in some way before, even if she didn’t really show it, or act like she was. It’s quite obvious now with how relaxed she seems. I feel so bad that I had no idea anything was going on with her. The tooth looked even normal before, you would have never guessed anything is wrong with it.

Poor girl!!!

A few hours later after we’ve been at the Vet, Murli was really happy and having a good stretch up on the fridge <3

A little later the same day and she was feeling great!

As for Sonic and Samantha? They are doing purrfectly fine! We thankfully have gotten some sunny weather now, so the three of them catch up on getting some sun on the balcony.

Especially Murli and Samantha are out on the balcony all the time. Lets hope we’ll have a sunny and rather warm late summer and fall, would be nice!

Currently

As of now, I’m writing on another post, and I want to try to post a lot more, even if it’s just tiny little posts or pictures. Documenting life, our life with the cats and whatever else.

Ralph and I want to do a couple things for our apartment. Make it really pretty and get all the lamps and pictures up. It’s lovely already, but there are still some things left that need to be done. I’ll take pictures of it for sure.

There’s also a really weird neighbour that I want to write about…

I think I’ve rambled on for long enough now…

Have a lovely rest of the week everyone! Much love from Ralph, the cats and me!

March 27, 2017 at 8pm Monday

Hey everypawdy! I hope everyone is well and had a nice weekend. We had beautiful warm spring weather for most of last week. There are pretty flowers everywhere!

I was still quite busy this week, more than I had anticipated, even during the weekend. The time seemed to be running away from me even more than usual, due to the time change at 3am on Sunday.  I don’t struggle with the change like I do with the winter time change, but it constantly feels like I run out of time lol.

After the warm weather, it cooled down towards the weekend, with a cold wind. Now the forecast says it’s getting warm again. Seems to be true, because I suddenly got a migraine in the late afternoon. It’s subsiding and almost completely gone by now thanks to the Triptan.

But after a mostly cloudy weekend, the sky was so intensely blue and the sun was out all day. Murli also caught her first little fly for this year. It’s the first one I’ve seen and it promptly flew in shortly after opening the big window in the room. Murli caught it after it had flown towards the small window where Murli sat.

We still have the huge construction site going on in our street, but the noise isn’t like it was in the first few days, so it’s not really too big of a deal. It’s just huge lol. Last time, as they were digging towards the water supply line,  they accidently caused a hole in the our water supply pipe, that runs into our building and was slightly above the water main that feeds our water pipe. They are currently replacing the plumbing with new pipes for the water supply. Wasn’t a big deal either, but interesting to watch. No flooding was caused, but the hole they dug along the water line, quickly filled with water. But they threw in a pretty big pump right away, and leading the hose down into the sewer. They fixed it pretty quickly, it was astounding. By now they already replaced everything and the part of the street already gets new pavement, which looks really great.

Murli is doing fine, and often watches everything that goes on in the street. It’s now the “Builders channel” on “Kitty-TV” 😹

My Dad is doing fine as well, and me too 😺 Going to stop by your lovely blogs tomorrow! Finally not so busy anymore this week. Purrs & Hugs & Love from us💞🐾

January 28, 2017 Winter Pictures

When I bought Murlis Vet-Food from our Vet-office, I walked home through the park (Volksgarten), as it’s quite a short cut. It was really freezing cold, and it was quite icy. Thankfully I didn’t faceplant anywhere and got a couple of nice pictures.

There is a Stupa in this park. It one that stands for Enlightenment, as well as Peace, Wisdom and Compassion. In 1998 the Dalai Lama was here as well.

And this is how icy it was… That’s all solid frozen ice around that tree and everywhere else.

January 28 2017 11:17am

Like usually, I took my other short cut through the property of the local monastery and church, which is open all day so people can walk through here. Otherwise you’ll have to walk a couple blocks around the area, instead of cutting right through here. It’s only used by local residents, as people who are not from this area, wouldn’t really know about it, as it’s not obvious at all.

It’s really pretty too! After the huge parking lot and gardens, you get into one of the buildings, that is adjacent to the church. I really love the inner courtyard with it’s columns. It’s all really old. That’s how it looks from the castle hill (but with zoom, otherwise it wouldn’t look as close): Minorites monastery and church

In the 13. Century, monks of the order of the Minorites, which was founded by Saint Francis of Assisi, started to settle on the other side of the river at first, where the city wall was. Then in the mid 1500s the monks started to settle on this side of the river, where todays Minorites monastery and church is. The Church and monastery was finished in 1607 and that’s how old that building is. There were some later additions, like the two church steeples and facade, build between 1742 – 1744.

At the Vets office, picking up Murlis Veterinary Foodz 💗🐾
We ran out a bit too soon this time and the delivery for Murlis veterinary prescription food comes next week on Tuesday. I order her prescription food at one of the few pet supply places that carry it and there I get discount on quantity. #caturday
